Infographics for Scientists – Key Principles

This workshop will provide you with techniques and knowledge essential to creating effective infographics. Tailored for scientists and students, but useful for anyone working on (science) communication, this workshop will teach you the fundamental principles of visual storytelling, how to structure scientific information, and the practical steps to designing effective infographics.

What you’ll learn

• You will learn why visuals are crucial in scientific communication and how they improve the communication of complex topics.
• You will be able to identify different types of visuals and in which context they should be used. 
• You will learn how to apply the fundamental steps to design an infographic, namely to:
  • Spot key information, organise and summarise ideas, and select data that supports the main message;
  • Establish the flow, rank information, and create a hierarchy;
  • Identify the main topic and the underlying message of your infographic;
  • Determine who your infographic is intended for and tailor your design and content to meet their needs.
• You will learn how to create an infographic through hands-on exercises, applying the principles and techniques covered in the workshop.

Workshop content

Module 1 – The Importance of Visuals, covering the power of visual communication in science and the different types of visuals you can use.

Module 2 – Fundamental Steps to Building an Infographic, covering how to define your goal, message and target, and how to plan and design an infographic.

This workshop uses various interactive learning approaches: videos about key topics, practical examples, quizzes, and exercises.

Duration: This workshop is structured to be completed over approximately 8 hours, at your own pace.

Requirements: No prior experience in the design of infographics is required. To complete this workshop, you will need a computer with internet access. All exercises can be done using free design tools like Canva and PowerPoint.
